O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred on a number of other shows and was a part of made for TV and independent films. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC police show NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the squad from 1993 until 1996. The actress was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
