O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
